Where lies the balance between Safe and Strange? Halfway through post-production on Elizabeth and Timothy’s wedding, I found myself giggling and goosebumpy every few images: “This photograph is so ODD.”
It’s the thing I’ve noticed about photographing solo. Without someone else on hand to make the Safe photographs, I must either abandon my artistic vision to focus on all things Safe; or I embrace the Odd and say, “F*** it! Strange photos for everyone!”
I find myself doing just THAT more and more, as creative kindreds become my most common clients. It’s a bit scary, looking through a collection of images to see very few familiar angles or Safe shots. But it’s also a jumpstart for my heart.
Safe is cubicles. Safe is templates. Safe is everything I walked away from the moment I knew walking away was an option. Why go back to Safe when Strange is right here for the taking?
I think we were trying to look cool and unusual in this selfie. I’m not sure that we achieved that, but we definitely look Strange.
